Standing upright is uniquely human.
It takes anything from 9 to 15 months to learn how to stand upright without support.
Then we tend to take standing for granted.
In standing, we want to look for a dynamic posture – one from which we can move in any direction without the need for preparatory adjustments. To achieve this, the extensor and flexor muscles need to work in co-ordination and harmony together.
Throughout a lifetime, often starting from a very young age, a slightly more flexed, rounded posture often takes over as the flexor muscles pull us a little bit down – something which comes from too much sitting, looking at screens, stress, tiredness. Movement in the ribs, spine, hips, pelvis can reduce, often without us knowing it.
This workshop will look at how we can counteract this, from the feet to the head, begin to engage the extensors and bring movement back to areas which might be a bit sleepy. The result will be a better, dynamic posture and a freeing up of joints.

‘Unpacking Posture’ is the theme set by the Feldenkrais Guild UK, and during this week there will be many workshops and lessons based around this theme across the UK.
Every day during International Feldenkrais week, the Feldenkrais Guild UK will release a recorded Feldenkrais lesson. Check them out for yourself!

11 July: Functional Breathing and Rib Flexibility
Breathing is something we all do from birth until death, and we rarely think about it.
But where do you breathe?
Which parts of the ribs do you utilise?
Do you use your diaphragm efficiently?
Do you have a tendency to breathe shallowly, or feel you can’t breathe deeply enough?
Do your ribs form a cage, that is tight and inflexible, or can your ribs allow you to move freely in the chest?
This workshop will look at a functional ways of breathing with everything that is available to breathe with, from the ribs, the diaphragm and the abdomen.

8 August: Fascinating Feet
A foot: a masterpiece of engineering.
26 Bones.
33 Joints.
100+ ligaments.
And we have two of them!
The feet must be able to bear the weight of the rest of the body over both feet in standing or over one foot in walking.
They allow us to walk, run, skip, jump.
They are shock absorbers, levers and yet are able to provide a sound base on which to stand and to balance.
Feet influence the whole of the rest of us – the ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, spine, shoulder girdle and head.
Feet have more nerve endings than any other part of the body. These supply us with information about the texture, temperature and slope of surfaces that we walk on, allowing the foot to adjust itself to that surface within nano seconds.
For this workshop we will be working partly with bare feet, and exploring the wonderful things feet can do. You will see for yourselves where this will echo and resound within your whole self. (Alternatively you can wear socks with toes, or socks that are not too tight).
